buildering redux

A revisited version of work appearing in In The Future. This exploration was part of a larger project that centered around a form study of the urban sport of buildering.

I was aiming for plausibility on this one. It turns out this is pretty tame when it comes to the variety of amazing shapes to be found in real leafhoppers - courtesy of millions of years of natural selection. Yes, the thorns were intentionally oriented in both directions.

Inspired by that scene in Time Bandits where the thieves hang over the void in a cage and swing their way to freedom - something about the feeling of that space...or maybe a synesthetic reaction to the color...I can't quite explain it.

hollyhock house

gouache, 2X3 in.We sketched last weekend on location at Wright's Hollyhock House. Unfortunately there was no real cover with a view to the house - it was quite hot so we took shelter under the pavilion and sketched views across Hollywood Blvd. and toward the gallery building. We could see the crumbling Ennis House on the hill across the blvd. I heard that neighbors wanted to demo it because it's bringing their property values down. Hopefully the house will get restored before the myopics have it destroyed.

caltech

A gouache sketch done on the Caltech campus. A wedding and a Quinceanera were going on around us. It didn't occur to me at the time to drop a few pink dresses into this view. The moment has passed.
